Championing Banned Books: A Gathering of Book Clubs & Book Lovers, with a Book SWAP

Join us for a celebration of books and literature. Bring your favorite passage from a banned book to read!

October 4-10, 2026, is Banned Books Week, a campaign begun by the American Library Association to protect the freedom to read. On Saturday, October 10, 2026, CityLit Project partners with Motor House to engage readers, writers, and book club members in reading and sharing banned books. This event acknowledges the gravity of banned books while ultimately serving as a celebration of literature. Consider this an invitation to join us in a lively exchange about books that are being forced off library and school shelves. Attendees should come prepared to read a favorite passage from a banned book and discuss its importance. This event is free. Registration is requested, but not required. You’ll find the link here:

The books on the banned list often include authors or characters of color, LGBTQIA+ authors or characters, and themes of anti-racism, social justice, equity, or the freedom to be one's self. According to PEN America, nearly 60% of books on the banned list are written for youth; undervalued young folks often in desperate need to see themselves represented. Banning books, where they might find resonance, does great harm.

To elevate awareness for the freedom to read and write stories, we encourage book swaps, reading out loud, and a cultural exchange of ideas. Let's teach each other how to support books and authors in this age where the freedom of expression is under threat.  

All are welcome. Come alone or bring a friend. A host will moderate the two-hour festive event: an afternoon delight of books, conversation, and the freedom to read. Motor House spirits are available for purchase.
